Ways to offset the difference
Cutting bought coffees a week would cover the extra fuel cost. Make one at home — your wallet won't know the difference
🚗
Carpooling just one day a week could save you roughly /week on fuel — that adds up fast
🚌
Swapping one commute for public transport could save you even more. Plan a trip at AT.govt.nz (Auckland) or Metlink (Wellington)
3 ways to use less fuel right now
Drive smoother, not slower. Aggressive acceleration and hard braking can increase fuel use by 20-40%. Ease onto the accelerator, coast to slow down, and keep your speed steady. Some Kiwis are dropping from 10 to 7 L/100km just by changing how they drive. That's a 30% saving.

Check your tyre pressure. Two minutes at any petrol station, costs nothing. Under-inflated tyres increase rolling resistance and every 1 psi drop costs you roughly 0.2% more fuel. Properly inflated tyres can improve your economy by up to 3%.

Combine your trips. A cold engine uses significantly more fuel for the first few kilometres. Three separate errands means three cold starts. Plan your route, do them all in one go, and you cut out the wasted fuel from warming up each time.
Important: This tool provides estimates only and is not financial advice. Fuel efficiency figures are based on manufacturer-rated combined cycle data from RightCar/EECA and may differ from your actual consumption. Your real costs depend on driving style, conditions, vehicle age, and local fuel prices. Prices shown are national averages sourced from MBIE and Gaspy and are updated regularly as prices change.
